Management
I
created three startup companies and acquired
a fourth, within a holding company of which I was a founder and the
Managing Director.
The Newpoint Publishing Group
ultimately employed about 150 people; had a turnover of more £8 million
and 20% net profitability
when it was finally acquired by Reed
International plc in 1991.
I was appointed Chairman of Hanson
Green - a specialist head-hunting consultancy sourcing Chairmen and
Non-Executive Directors for the most significant of British Boardrooms.
The company was insolvent and I led it
back to good health - it is still flourishing today.
I became Chairman of a London Hospital NHS Trust in 1992 and in 1995 I was appointed Chairman of The NHS Supplies National Policy Steering Group.
Additional NHS responsibilities included being
Chairman of The Institute of Directors NHS Corporate Governance Steering
Group and the Regional Selection Panel for Appointment of Chairmen and
Members of NHS Boards.
As the
founding Managing Director, I was the initial salesman in our publishing
group and ultimately recruited and trained sales staff and directed the sales efforts of
the business.
I also published promotional material for, among others, Marks & Spencer; Sainsbury's; Unilever; ICI; Courtaulds; Schlumberger and The British Post Office
( I
produced the media that launched their mobile telephone service).
I created the
world's first on-line interactive digital information service (Careerdata), before
the days of the internet.
